NJ: No Second Wave Of Coronavirus Yet Despite Recent Case Spike

NEW JERSEY – State officials say there's no evidence of a second wave of the coronavirus crisis hitting New Jersey right now despite a recent spike in cases that pushed the Garden State's total past 200,000 on Monday.

Edward Lifshitz, medical director for the state Department of Health, said a number of factors would point to a second wave hitting New Jersey "but right now, I would not say it's a wave."

He said there were other reasons that caused a recent spike in cases in Monmouth and Ocean counties.

Last week, Ocean County became the first county in weeks to have a single-day triple-digit total of new cases, with 112 new cases revealed on Thursday. The county also had the highest new-case total of any county on Friday and Monday: 93 and 77.

Monmouth County also had among biggest increases in recent days: 83 on Thursday, 51 on Friday and 46 on Monday.

There also have been some flare-ups at schools and in some communities at the Jersey Shore and elsewhere:

Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said four contact tracers have been redeployed to Ocean County to investigate if the new cases are related — and if this means that New Jersey has a new outbreak.

But Persichilli said New Jersey so far has seen new cases linked to not only to celebratory gatherings and house parties but also solemn gatherings such as in funerals.

Gov. Phil Murphy also said that New Jersey is testing more than ever, which could explain why New Jersey's daily new cases – after dropping to the 200-to-300 level in August – have been hovering around 400 and 500 lately (see daily case total below).

"I'm personally of the opinion that this is part of the ebb and flow and partly explainable by specific events and partly explainable by a lot of testing capacity," Murphy said.

Murphy announced 457 more cases and seven deaths on Tuesday. Read more: Read more: NJ Coronavirus, Reopen Updates: Here's What You Need To Know

New Jersey's models have suggested that the growth of the virus – which has slowed to the point that it's among the lowest in the nation – could tick right back up again once the weather gets colder in October. Also, people who have had the virus have shown that they're only immune for several months, according to some recent studies.

Lifshitz listed the factors that would indicate a second wave is hitting New Jersey:

  • The state's positivity rate, which is now under 2 percent, would be rising – perhaps closer to double-digit territory that states such as Iowa, which is at 15 percent, are now experiencing.

  • There would be a noticeable growth in hospitalization and visits to emergency departments. New Jersey's numbers, however, continue to drop: After having more than 1,000 in the hospital in July, the Garden State had 349 on Monday.

"I do not yet see a second wave," Lifshitz said. "I'm always paying attention for the feeling of that undertow that might be suggesting that a wave is coming, and certainly any increase in numbers catches our attention and rightly increases our response to that area."

Either way, New Jersey has gathered millions of pieces of personal protective equipment – gowns, gloves, masks, among other things – to make sure hospitals aren't caught flat-footed and desperate for help.

"Building this stockpile is how we've been working to protect against the next wave – please God – or the next pandemic, even while we continue to fight this one," Murphy said. "We will not be caught unprepared."

Here is what the Murphy administration has done:

  • New Jersey set a goal of collecting 5 million N95 masks, and Murphy said the state is already at 94 percent of that, or 4.7 million masks, with more coming in every month.

  • For surgical masks, New Jersey currently has 1 million in stock and another 12 million on order to be delivered within the next month.

  • With face shields, New Jersey set a goal of having 2 million in its warehouse and, right now, Murphy said the state has 1.7 million.

  • New Jersey has 1 million hospital gowns currently on order with delivery expected in a matter of weeks, and these will be added to the 2.1 million currently in stock. When this next order is received, the state will have 300,000 gowns above its goal.

  • New Jersey has a lofty goal of collecting 110 million gloves, and the state's warehouse currently has 1.9 million. An additional 75 million are on order and will be delivered within roughly six weeks, Murphy said.

  • The state has a stockpile of 1,447 ventilators that can be deployed "at literally a moment's notice," Murphy said. Another 500 are on order, and the state says there are currently about 600 ventilators in New Jersey's hospitals.

  • The state has built up a stockpile of the antiviral drug Remdesivir, with more than 1,100 cases in at the ready.
